Gaiety Bar, Grand Hotel

During the spring and sweltering summer of 1976, the bar at what was then the Grand Hotel was a meeting place of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE).

Built in 1886, Westgate Street’s Grand Hotel was used as a meeting place by trades unions and other organisations throughout much of its 120 -year history. The Cardiff Borough Cycling Club, the Jewish Amalgamated Society of Tailors, and the Cardiff women’s rugby team of 1917 all used the hotel at some point. In the 1970s it was the turn of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE) who held their meetings there throughout the spring and early summer of 1976.
