The Barrels

In the 1970s this winebar was popular with Cardiff’s lesbian community at a time when nearby Sirs was still very male-oriented. It was the regular meeting place of the CHE (Campaign for Homosexual Equality) until 1981, when much of Bute Terrace was demolished.

Though Sirs on St Mary Street began allowing women through its doors in the mid-1970s it remained a mostly gay male environment, and venues such as Barrels became popular with Cardiff’s lesbian community. One regular recalls that Radio Cardiff’s Donna Zee was one of its DJs, and from 1978 to 1981 it was a meeting place for the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE). Over the following years much of Bute Terrace, including Barrels, was demolished to make way for developments such as Cardiff Ice Rink (later replaced by John Lewis) and Jury’s Hotel (later renamed the Park Inn).
