The Duke of Wellington

Though never officially a gay pub, in 1979 the Duke of Wellington featured in the listings of Gay News, with reference to its snug, and as the setting of drag performance in Sion Eirian’s novel Bob yn y Dinas.

The Duke of Wellington, with its grand red-brick edifice, was never officially “gay”, but in the late 1970s the pub, or more specifically its “snug”, seems to have acquired a gay clientele. In 1979 it featured in both the listings of Gay News and the novel Bob yn y Ddinas by Welsh author Siôn Eirian; the latter featuring a scene in which the protagonist, Bob, visits the pub, where he watches a drag performance and encounters a gay barman named Toni.
