Until its closure in the 1980s, this docks pub attracted a diverse clientele that included sailors from around the world, some of whom, according to one former patron, were “very gay-friendly”.
The North Star was located on lower Bute Street, roughly opposite where the Packet still stands. It was demolished, along with much of the block in which it was situated, to make way for the development of Mermaid Quay.
“(It was) frequented by sailors some of whom were very gay friendly.”
“I never dared drink in the North Star – it had a hell of a reputation!”
“I went there once or twice, strange place. The floor was so soaked in beer I couldn’t stay upright in my stilettos!”
“I was invited a few times but it was too scary for me.”
