The Terminus

You may know it as Peppermint, Sam’s Bar or Zinc, but for much of its history this was the Terminus Hotel, and in the 1980s served as a meeting place for the CHE and Cardiff student GaySoc.

This familiar venue on the corner of St Mary Street and Mill Lane opened in 1858 as the Steam Mill Arms, named after the mill from which Mill Lane gets its name. With the advent of trams its became the Terminus Hotel, and still had this name in the 1980s when it became a popular meeting place for gay and lesbian groups, including the CHE (Campaign for Homosexual Equality) and Cardiff University students’ GaySoc. Since the 1990s it has been known as Sam’s Bar, Zinc, and most recently Peppermint.
