Based at this Charles Street address in the late 1970s, the Women’s Centre is described by one who remembers it as “a largely lesbian social centre with pool table”. It was home to women’s aid groups including Lesbian Line.
Until quite recently Charles Street was a place known not only for its queer nightlife (Club X and Exit were there, only the Eagle remains) but also for political activism, community support, and spirituality (the Quaker meeting house and Catholic Cathedral are still there). In the late 1970s, No.55 was the Women’s Centre, home to various women’s aid groups, including Lesbian Line, while also serving, in the words of one former patron, as a “largely lesbian social centre with a pool table”. The Women’s Centre moved on to addresses in Cathays and Roath, while the Charles Street address later became the offices of Big Issue Cymru.
