The Red Dragon Bar

Now part of a Marks & Spencer food hall this was once the Red Dragon Bar, a gay-friendly pub which in the 1980s and ’90s played an important role in HIV/AIDS fundraising.

Now Cardiff Central’s branch of Marks & Spencer, the Red Dragon was a gay-owned pub and entertainment venue that played a significant role in HIV/AIDS fundraising in the 1980s and early ’90s. It hosted Friday night cabaret evenings with “drag acts like Dockyard Doris”, according to one regular, while another recalls that its windows were one-way mirrors that allowed patrons to see outside, but prevented passersby from looking in!
